Insights

Drawing from the research that took place last week, we listed out some of the key methodologies we noticed which people use as educational tools to 'teach' manners.

For example, the Facebook ad campaign or the 'Incosiderate cell phone guy' both use Opposite/Reverse Psychology to lay emphasis on what is the right way of doing things. Most often, these result in a humourous/fun way to establish these facts. Sometimes Exaggeration works well to get the point across.

A middle ground or 3rd party is often used to teach manners, like through a board game, a toy, a tablemat.

Questions/Quizzes can also be used to teach as they always result in a Competition of some sort, where people are interested and want to know more or do better just to win the game. Thus, Gamification also strives to encourage users to engage in desired behaviours with the application.

Like in the application Out of the Box training game to teach manners to dogs, each activity talks about giving the dog a reward at the end after achieving it. Thus Rewards/Punishments are again a useful tool. Conditioning to teach a certain behaviour works as well, when a person forms a certain Ritual/Habit around an activity.

Steven also talked about Persuasive technology being a great tool in achieving the same.
